PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The goal of this activity is to have students make observations about quadratic relationships. Students construct their own meaning and understanding of quadratic relationships and will be able to tell you the characteristics of graphs of quadratics by the end of this activity.
This investigation into quadratic relationships will give your students some context with which to apply to new and different problems involving quadratics.
Packet includes investigation worksheet, answer key and teacher tips.

This particular activity involves fixed perimeters and areas of rectangles. Students will be drawing rectangles with a fixed perimeter, completing a table of values, graphing, reading graphs and tables and answering critical thinking questions.

***This same activity is available for purchase in the Packet "Quadratic Relationships, Functions and Parabolas Packet".

On  March 1, 2013,  Buyer asked:
Is this activity made for students to do on their own WITHOUT any prior knowledge of quadratic equations? I am looking for something for students to do that will help them "discover" quadratic functions.
Thank you!

On  March 1, 2013The Enlightened Elephant answered:
Students do not need ANY prior knowledge of quadratics. This activity helps students see quadratic relationships; that they result in a curved shaped called a parabola. It also helps them see the important features of the parabola; the max and min point (the vertex), the axis of symmetry and corresponding points. It doesn't reveal the form of a quadratic equation, but rather gives them an idea of quadratic relationships and their graphs.

Note: The title was slightly misleading, so I have changed it.
