Alphabet books are a staple in most elementary classroom libraries. Creating ABC books is a familiar writing activity for the primary grades, but there are many ways to use these great resources with intermediate students as well. Such a great product even for Grade 5. We used them as one of our final projects in an Aboriginal unit. They created A is for Aboriginal Culture books, sharing their knowledge from the unit.

This was absolutely wonderful as an "End-of-Year Memory Book." We started about six weeks from the end of school and would brainstorm things we had done during the year that could be used for a particular letter. Since they were second graders, I required them to write 3 complete sentences for each entry, as well as a colored, detailed pictured. What a great keepsake to send home at the end of the year!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've been teaching for 17 years. I started out as a 5th grade drop-out prevention teacher and I am currently teaching 2nd grade gifted students. In between, I also taught 3rd and 4th grade, was the Drop-out prevention resource specialist, and taught writing as a special.
