In this activity developed by Laura Candler, students will analyze a character's traits and will create a digital word cloud based on those traits. A word cloud, sometimes called a Wordle, is an artistic arrangement of words of different sizes. The size of each word is related to the number of times it appears in the text. This activity includes directions and a printable. Tip: Try this activity yourself before using it with students.

I love this idea. I was also thinking that instead of having each student list multiple words and rating them, that you could have each student pick just 2-3 words to submit to a class poll. They could then look at how many times each word was used and use those numbers to create their word cloud. Just a thought though :)

Excellent ideas here! I teach small groups of gifted students poetry writing. Using wordle.net that I found on one of your other items, they each created a cover for their poetry binder using words about themselves. I especially appreciate your character traits list - very helpful in expanding vocabulary. Thank you!

I have done a similar activity when I taught 3rd grade. I read aloud the book, "Martin's Big Words," and discussed with students the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. We brain-stormed some "big words" about our lives and created word clouds about ourselves. I printed them in color and laminated for the hallway. Students really liked having a nice one to keep for themselves after the display was taken down.

What is the easiest/fastest way to save the word clouds? The last time I did this with my students, I went to each child's computer and did a screen shot and saved into a Word document, then saved it to my flash drive. I then printed each one out on a color printer. This process takes several steps, so I was wondering if you any better suggestions.

Hi! Sorry I missed this question earlier. You didn't say what grade you teach so if you teach young children this may be your only option. If your students are 4th grade or up you can probably have them take a screen shot and save it to a file to print later.
