Heartfelt Causes and Effects is a two-part lesson developed by Laura Candler based on the favorite Valentine's day story, Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch. In the first part of the lesson, students listen to the story and the identify cause and effect relationships they discover. Students also learn to write sentences to express cause and effect relationships. Finally, they explore how their own actions can affect others by observing the results of their words and deeds and using the information to complete a graphic organizer. This lesson-plan includes two variations of the Cause & Effect Rockets graphic organizer - one is for Valentine's Day and the other can be used at any time of the year. This activity pack was great! Thanks for the tip that the book is on storylineonline! My students really enjoyed hearing the story read online and we had great discussion about what we do affects others. We completed the rocket cause and effect pages, too. Great lesson!

I have the Graphic Organizer for Reading and it is such a valuable resource. I can't wait to try this with my 4th graders. Cause and Effect is a hard concept to teach. I love the suggestion to use Storyline. I think a teacher could use Storyline as a resource with many of the graphic organizers in your book. The teaching model you outline in your book is a classroom transforming technique.

Thanks, Denise! I was trying to dream up a graphic organizer just for cause and effect that would help get the concept across and I was hit with the rocket analogy! But my artwork was so pathetic that I had to get help from my daughter Wendy. She drew the rockets and flames perfectly, don't you think? Then I modified it for Valentine's Day. Thanks so much for this! Text structures, like Cause/Effect, are ultimate targets for State Test questions!!! So, this is perfect for lower, upper elementary as well as through 8th grade!!!! Thanks Ann Marie! I really didn't know you would do something like this with 8th graders. Would you even do the part at the end where they see how their actions affect others? I guess if the rocket pattern is too babyish you could have them just draw boxes in a journal or something.
