Are all boxes of candy hearts the same? This Valentine Hearts Investigation created by Laura Candler engages the class in collecting data from 10 boxes of colored valentine heart candies to answer this question. As students work, they apply statistical concepts such as range, mode, median, and mean. This activity comes with a Smartboard Notebook 10 file, but the Smartboard is not a requirement for teaching the lesson. Promethean boards users should be able to convert this file, and the lesson can also be taught with an overhead projector or chalkboard.

I used this as my very first smartboard lesson. I don't have a smartboard, but I used the one in our school library. I did have some glitches with the lesson, but that I think was my lack of experience. I added the tables for the kids to input the data into, and that caused me some problems. I was not sure if you had meant to include them or not, so I did it myself. It WAS a great learning experience though, I had to ask several more experienced teachers to help me, and I learned some new things. I would definitely use this again. I have 28 students so I changed some of the information to allow me to have 14 boxes of candy, and the 15th was the mystery box. I also didn't anticipate that the candy colours in the boxes would not match up with the ones on the tally chart. My boxes did not have purple or orange in them, but instead had blue. For next year, I will know to open and check what is actually inside each box. The students were fully engaged and it gave them good practice of both graphing and measurement of central tendency. You might want to include some further discussion about what type of graph is appropriate (based on the type of data presented). My students were unsure as to why they could not use a line graph, and I explained it to them, but I am not sure all teachers would have this information at their fingertips while attempting this lesson. It did take the full 3 periods to complete, but overall, I think I learned some new things and so did the students. Thanks for creating this resource.

If I decide to make a product that's similar to this item, I'll be sure to incorporate your ideas! My products definitely have more detail and information for the teacher than my free items.
