I searched high and low for a basic, close reading test that would simply show me whether students did their outside-of-class reading of FAHRENHEIT 451, and I found that none existed that met my needs (detailed + easy to grade). I was not striving for higher order thinking...just a basic, Accelerated-Reader-type quiz that would demonstrate completion of the assigned reading. The higher order thinking questions come out after my students have completed the reading--through Socratic Seminar. Thus, this is basic, but it serves a specific purpose of student accountability.
I've created three 15-question, multiple-choice tests (Parts I, II, & III) to serve this purpose. To make a teacher's job easier, I've also included an answer key. Part I is a free product so you can gauge whether this will work for you.
I have already tested these in my own classroom (9th graders) and found the tests to be valid and an accurate assessment of whether students read the novel. From the mouths of one of my students, "As long as you read the book, it's easy...if you didn't read it, you're screwed!"
