Fall Writing Project: Make a Candy Corn Paragraph (Candy Corn Publishing Format) by Erica
This is a highly motivating lesson to get your students excited about writing and publish their writing. Start by having the students bring in a fall object such as: candy corn, a pumpkin, Indian corn, leaves, etc. I also bring in a fall object of my own such as a mum. Have the students brainstorm using their five senses about their fall object. Then have them write a descriptive paragraph about their fall object. The candy corn is modeled after the cheeseburger/hamburger paragraph model. This model includes an introduction sentence, five detail sentences, and a conclusion sentence. The candy corn can be used on white paper for the students to write their rough draft. Using card stock or construction paper for the final copy is a great way to make it last longer. When you connect the topic sentence, detail sentence 1, detail sentence 2, detail sentence 3, detail sentence 4, detail sentence 5, and the conclusion all together it creates a giant piece of candy corn. I would suggest connecting each piece with a long strip of paper running vertically along the back side. You can either have the students color each section to resemble a piece of candy corn (using white, yellow, and orange) or copy it onto these colors of paper/cardstock/construction paper.
