PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This PowerPoint presentation clearly and concisely introduces students to the concept of Figurative Language. It compares figurative language to literal language, and gives several examples. It covers the five types of figurative language: personification, metaphor, simile, idiom, and hyperbole. It used photography to illustrate the difference between literal and figurative language. It finishes with a review quiz to test students' comprehension.

I made this PowerPoint because my high school students had a hard time expressing the difference between literal language and figurative language (a question that actually comes up on standardized tests quite often). To understand what figurative language is, it was necessary to teach them the definition of literal language, and show examples of both.

This presentation is simple enough for grade school, but essential enough to be suitable for high school, especially when they need a review of figurative language.

The presentation is designed with note-taking in mind. Slides that are meant to be copied have a pencil image in the bottom right corner.

Two practice session quizzes are included, to check for understanding along the way.

I recommend following this presentation with with my Figurative Language worksheet bundle, which provides nine pages of guided practice defining, identifying, applying, and creating figurative language.

Together, the presentation and the worksheet require 50-60 minutes of class time.

All of the images in this product are used according to the terms set my their creators. No images are used without permission. Image credits are in the notes section of the PowerPoint

The concept of figurative language is part of the content of English classes from 5th to 12th grade. No matter what grade you teach, this flexible tool will be part of your arsenal for years to come. It can serve as an introduction or as review.
