In order for students to write a summary, they need to be able to find topics and main ideas. This presentation guides students through finding the topic of a paragraph, and then using the topic to find the main idea. What if the main idea is not in the first sentence? This presentation helps students to see that some paragraphs do not have the main idea as the first sentence. This presentation includes over 40 slides, pictures, and 5 example paragraphs.
This Powerpoint is also included in the materials bundle "Teaching Main Ideas"

I'm the author of two books for Heinemann: Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Retelling, and The Forest AND the Trees: Helping Readings Identify Important Details in Texts and Tests. Both books help teachers to figure out and meet the needs of their students. I have taught for thirteen years, working with seventh graders, sixth graders, and fourth graders.
