This literature unit is designed to encourage reading comprehension skills such as identifying story elements, ordering important events, and making predictions.
If you were lucky enough to grow up in a part of the country where fireflies light up the night, you probably got a jar and went outside to collect them. What did you do later on when the light the insects made began to dim inside that jar? That's the problem faced by the protagonist of Julie Brinckloe's endearing story Fireflies.
This literature unit consists of four pages. The first page introduces new vocabulary words and asks the reader to use them to predict what might happen in the book. A story map follows. The third page presents the story's important events and asks the reader to put them in the correct order. The final page is a worksheet in which students are asked "rescue" words from a jar by turning them into compound words. Fireflies is a wonderful book to share with young readers, and this literature unit will make it even more enjoyable. A complete answer key is included in the download.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I taught for a total of 32 years, mostly in second grade. After getting my Masters in special education, I spent 5 years as an LD Resource teacher before returning to the regular classroom. I have taught third grade and a multi-age primary class as well.
