Challenge your students with this activity on the first day of school. It can be used as an eye opener or as a day closer. Students must write words in the chart which begin with the letters in the words FIRST DAY as in the first day of school. There are 5 categories. Students should be encouraged to use reference/resource materials located in the classroom for answers as well as to check their spelling. This would also be a great activity for those students who complete their work early or for the gifted and talented students in your classroom. It might also be assigned as a first day homework assignment.

I am so glad to hear that. I think of it as a great activity/challenge for the gifted and talented. Students who aren't as gifrted might pair up with another student to complete this. TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Subject Area:
I have taught for 36 years at the 3rd, 5th, and 6th grade levels. Fifth grade is my first love. I teach all major subject areas. In addition to my regular classroom duties, I have taught in a Basic Skills summer school program for many years as well as taught workshops to co-workers in whole language and technology. My other duties at school include being "Teacher in Charge" and Student Council advisor.
