I am looking for a 1st grade writing unit with Poetry writing included. Can you tell me a little bit about what you have in yours?

Thanks!

Hi Robin,

This set of materials includes resources for five units of study, one of which is a unit on poetry. The poetry section of the set is about 10 pages long and includes a list of mentor texts, a list of suggested minilessons, a grading rubric, a self-assessment, and graphic organizers prompting students to consider details, make comparisons, etc.

Thanks,
Andrea :)

Hi
Just looking for persuasive writing but don't mind the other units. How many lessons per unit are offered? Do these lessons have all the components of the writiers workshop or just the minilesson?

Hi RBoyd,

For each unit, there are enough suggested minilesson topics to get you through about 30 days, depending on how you structure it and how your writers progress. If you are looking for scripted lessons, though, you may not want to purchase this set. I list lessons per unit, but I don't write out, "First do this. Then, say this." etc.

Thanks,
Andrea :)

Hi "akieffner,"

I don't have anything currently made for second grade, but I have definitely been thinking about it. {It just comes down to finding the time.} I have had second grade teachers use this packet successfully, though. Many of the lesson suggestions are open-ended and would depend on the level and language you used during your lesson. All the graphic organizers, notebook resources, and posters would work for second grade. If your second graders are super high, I probably wouldn't recommend this item. I will be working on a higher level packet, but it probably won't happen until this summer. You could search Trina Dralus' store for writing resources. She's a colleague of mine and teaches second grade. Her store has some writing packets, too. Thanks for your interest. :)

Happy holidays!

First Grade's the Place to Be!
Do you have the "How to" writing included?

Thanks!

Hi :)

It's included in the "Informational Writing Unit of Study" section. Last year, we combined our "How-To" writing with our "All-About" unit of study, so children embedded a how-to page (or part) within their informational project. For example, if a student was writing a piece called "All About Football," he might add a page (or section) on "How To Punt a Football" or "How to Tackle Another Player." We were able to find mentor texts that feature the combination. We found one book that was "All About Ballet" and on one of the pages it explained step-by-step how to do a plie.

Thanks for your question,
Andrea

These look great. Do they go along with Lucy Calkins writing workshop for grade 1? Thanks

Hi Sandee,

Our teachers have been trained by staff developers at Teachers College and have attended several of their summer writing institutes. Their work has influenced this set of materials, but I offer additional pieces that have grown out of my practices as well. If you're familiar with writing workshop and plan for units of study in a variety of genres, this set of materials will complement what you're doing.

In this unit, I have a persuasive letter writing unit, but I am working on writing an opinion/argument unit that will go in this packet. The CCSS makes a distinction between persuasive and opinion/argument, so this update will come as soon as I finish writing it. For any teachers who have already purchased this item, the new addition will be available to them at no extra cost.

are the mini units for the whole year or just a few given for each unit? Are these the same unit names as uos?

These units work across the year if you average 20-30 days per unit, especially if you revisit a unit more than once and increase the level each time. That's what our district does now that we've adopted the CCSS. Our teachers address narrative writing and informational writing 2-3 times over the course of the year. In this set, I have a persuasive letter writing unit, but I am working on writing an opinion/argument unit that will go in this packet. The CCSS makes a distinction between persuasive and opinion/argument, so this update will come as soon as I finish writing it. hello!
Your writing units look wonderful :)
I was wondering if each of your units had a suggested time frame and also approx. how many mini-lessons were included with each unit? Do these units take a whole school year to get through? Sorry for all the questions. I use the 6 traits in my classroom and was thinking maybe I could incorporate these units also, but not sure if I would have enough time. thanks! Mary

Hi Mary,
Typically, each unit would last about 30 days, but that really depends on the teacher and the students' needs. There are more than 30 suggested minilessons per unit and that was done on purpose so a teacher could pick and choose the ones that best fit the academic needs of the class. Each unit has a thorough list of minilessons, but they aren't written with specific language like, "Say this..." "Do this..." If you have experience with writing instruction, you'll know how you want to teach the lesson, such as with one of your favorite pieces of literature and by modeling your own writing. I've also included a list of good mentor texts for each unit, but you may have books of your own that you like better... that won't matter, as long as you have access to literature that are examples of that kind of writing.
