This Short a Phonics Activity provides excellent practice in Common Core Essential Skills. Activity set includes 50 short a word cards, 10 sentence cards with a missing word (short a), numbered recording sheets to write completed sentences, directions page for teacher, and direction cards for students.
Ideas for using this center:
Use word cards as flash cards having students sound out words checking for accuracy.
Cards are sorted by numbers, 10 groups. They will take one group of flash cards at a time and say all the words. They will then pick up the sentence that has the same number on it. They will read the sentence with the missing word. They will then read the sentence 5 times replacing it with a different word from the group each time. Having students insert EACH word is a crucial step in identifying the correct answer choice in preparation for standardized tests. They will then decide which word best completes the sentence and set the match aside. Repeat with the other sentence strips and matching flash card sets.
Students will then write the completed sentences using correct capitalization and punctuation on the corresponding line of the recording sheet.
