Teachers help teachers study for the ESOL test! These are the compiled and typed study notes a group at my school used to prepare for the SAE for ESOL certification in Florida. We ALL passed! We did not put them in any special order; they were meant to be used as a tool for review.
As the one who had written them out on file cards to be used as flash cards said, "They are GOLDEN."

This study guide would have been unintelligible and useless had I not first completed XMANonline Study Guide and then the free FLDOE-furnished study guide. Though I picked up a few new facts from it, the TeachersPayTeachers product copied some of the same errors included in the XMANonline Study Guide and in the FLDOE Study Guide. XMANonline had several errors, but at least the format was more organized and clearer.
I passed the test--using only these sources--but the test is NOT easy!

A helpful start. Some of the guide is just from someone looking up the answers to the study guide questions- something you could do yourself if you take the time.
There was an error- it said that liquid is 2 phonemes..which is incorrect, it is 2 syllables. Phonemes are the smallest units of sound- and liquid has 4. It wasn't on the version of the test I took- but I can't give perfect marks to a guide with that mistake and others. I'd pay the money for this guide again though- its a nice overview and I passed :O) It wasn't all I used, though!

Although there was some great information in here, it was not very easy to follow and could have been much more organized. I only used it to read over, but I could not use it to actually study for the exam. If it was in a more organized format, it would be a much better document to have for preparation. But, since it was only $3.25, I don't regret purchasing it!

Notes were well written, but the format was out of sequence. For example the charts were not layed out properly on one page. Cummin's Framework should have been placed on one page, and the next three information key areas. Overall good study notes. Thank you

I noticed that you mention this is for SAE ESOL certification but the SAE is a seperate exam from the ESOL certification. I have already taken the SAE and would like ESOL certification rather than ESOL endorsement which is what my degree offers. Is this the correct study guide for ESOL certification K-12?

I would like to be certified to teach ESOL, I have a bachelor's in Spanish, a minor in Education and I am certified to teach Spanish. Yesterday, I called the Florida Department of Education and they told me that passing the ESOL subject area exam will allow me to teach ESOL. I think I will give this test a try, how long is the exam? I am interested in purchasing your study notes to get prepared. In advance, thanks for your help.

Hi Angie, I believe you can pass the test and add ESOL to your certificate, but then you have to have 120 staff development courses by the time your certification expires. I have not ever taken the test because I have a master's in ESOL. The teachers in my staff development classes usually say the test is long and they think they fail, but they usually pass if they study. I took the competencies that the state tests to make the study notes. If you know the laws, methods, theorists, and how to apply appropriate strategies to different levels of language acquisition, you should be well on your way. GOOD LUCK!! Susan

I looked at the competencies being tested in the DOE/FETC study booklet. I teach ESOL staff development for my district and found we needed more than the sample questions in the %5.00 book you can purchase online. It is about 18-20 pages. I don't remember exactly.
