Fluency is one the three big components to reading, yet we often overlook it in our reading instruction and assessment. We forget that a lack of fluency is not only often symptomatic of accuracy and automaticity, but can be an indicator of comprehension as well.
When we can decode so quickly it is an automatic act, then our rate of reading increases. When we understand what we are reading, and using context and syntax clues, then we read with correct expression and increased understanding.
This kit is designed to help you track fluency in your readers. It contains both an individual student fluency assessment and a tracking form. The individual fluency assessment is meant to be used twice; a student will cold-read a selection of your choosing while you complete a running record. The student then practices the reading for a designated amount of time (I usually give them 5 days), and then re-assess using the same reading and second half of the form. Find the differences in scores between the two readings, and you have evidence of fluency gained (or not) by using repeat readings.

I'm a passionate fourth grade teacher who loves my job! I taught first grade before switching up. I am always looking for authentic learning, innovative teaching, and avenues for bringing fun to my classroom. I haven't always been a teacher, though. I was a graphic designer before deciding to go back to school when my girls were little. I have my bachelor's degree in education from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, and my Masters in education from St. Mary's University in Winona.
