I am just beginning on TPT and use stories and books in my lesson plans. I noticed you have done this with your fairy tales. Did you have to get permission from each of the authors to not infringe on their copy rite....or is it okay to use them in the motivation? Thanks for your help, Lauriecarpe@yahoo.com

Hi Laurie. I am attaching a link to the newsletter with copyright info. that Paul sent out in January to all sellers. It could prove quite helpful to you if you have questions. If you are wondering about using Scholastic poems I would recommend you get permission first as recommended to you in the seller's forum. The fairy tales and fables I have in my packet are "retold" in my own words. The resource materials to check for understanding of other reading materials/books are considered to be support materials much like cliff notes or activities. Hope this helps. Thanks!-Yvonne :) Here is the link:

Hi Yvonne,
Do you think this unit is "meaty" enough for third graders?

Hi there. I have it coded for second grade CCSS but I would say, yes...it is meaty enough. There are several resources to pick and choose from with quite a bit of comparison of folktales and fairy tales. Thank you!-Yvonne :)

Just did the readers theater Goldilocks and on the last page there are two mother bear parts in a row, the second one should be baby bear's part. Thought you may want to change it! Again we love the unit!!

Hi Yvonne what two versions of the fairy tales did you use? I am trying to put the book sets together with books that the students could actually read in a group. Did you read them to the group or did the students actually read them? Also what exactly goes on the splash webs? Thank you for taking the time to answer me.
I so appreciate all of the work that you put into this unit. Oh one more thing what is the duplicate set of vocabulary cards used for?

Hi Joan,
Our school library had a great collection of modern fairy tales/fables but I had to purchase a book of traditional fairy tales. It is one book with all the famous traditional fairy tales in it. It is in my classroom where I can't see the author because I am at home but most book stores should have traditional versions if you need to buy them. I did have some leveled readers for some of the fables and Jack and the Beanstalk. I caution that a lot of the fairy tales out there are written for higher Lexile levels, therefore, you just need to check vocabulary and text levels when you are checking your books out. This unit can be adjusted to fit your needs. You can read whole group if you need to and do the activities together or, if your second graders can handle the text levels...let them give it a go in groups! As far as the splash webs they are graphic organizers for the children to record common traits in a traditional fairy tale. For example...In Red Riding Hood there is almost always a wolf, a little girl, and a grandmother. The setting is almost always in a forest. Once you've done these it helps the kids compare/contrast these traits to modern versions. They look at the splash webs and decide if the traits are the same or different.
I provided different options for teachers to use the vocabulary cards. There are word wall vocabulary cards, ABC colored vocabulary cards along with a B&W option for those who didn't want color. I like to provide different options for teachers to pick and choose what they want to use. Hope this helps. Thanks!-Yvonne

Is this using the reader's workshop model and if so does this include mini-lessons? Thanks!

Hi Aly! Thank you for asking about my Folktales, Fairy Tales, and Fables unit. There are materials (not lesson plans) in this packet that you can use for the mini-lessons of reader's workshop. There is a group project where the students have time to read individually and conference with the teacher about the fairy tales/folktales they are comparing. I believe that you could use this packet well for reader's workshop in your classroom. There are group activities along with individual reads to discuss literary elements. Thanks so much and Merry Christmas!-Yvonne Dixon

Hi Yvonne, I have another question. How is the following standard covered in your unit?
2.RL.8 - Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.
Thanks! Mary Beth

Hi Mary Beth,
I have it coded as 2.RL.9 and we compared different versions of fairy tales with a T-chart and Venn Diagram. We also did this with different versions of folktales. Thanks!-Yvonne Dixon

Hi Yvonne... this looks like a great resource, but I'm wondering... do the readers' theatre packets for the fairy tales have comprehension questions with them? I saw that the fables do.
Thanks! I look forward to your response. Mary Beth

Hi Mary Beth. Thank you and I appreciate you asking about the unit. I used the fairy tales in small groups and had my students complete a 5 W's graphic organizer about the readers' theatre packets. We used them more for a kick-off for writing projects to compare fairy tale elements. I don't have a comprehension sheet for each fairy tale if that is what you are looking for but there are graphic organizers and writing checklists to support the fairy tales. Thanks!-Yvonne
