What exactly is the diffence between a myth and a legend? Find out with these worksheets and handouts. This resource clearly defines the five most common folktale subgenres: fables, fairytales, tall tales, legends, and myths and gives students opportunities to apply what they have learned.

This download includes the following 6 handouts and worksheets:

-Folktale Overview (handout)
-Folktale Subgenre Chart (handout)
-Folktale Subgenre Chart (worksheet)
-Folktale Multiple Choice Quiz
-Folktales I Know (worksheet)
-Folktale Reflection (worksheet)

Please note that definitions for some subgenres (most notably legends and myths) vary slightly. I consulted a variety of reliable sources for the handouts, but my information my not match up perfectly with the information in your school/district curriculum.

I am looking for some task cards for folktales - My students have to differentiate between the plot features of each. This would be great. I have already purchased these activities.

Hi Rachel-I LOVE this resource and it was just what I needed! I was hoping that you could update the "Folktales I Know" page where it states in the directions to list all the "fairytales" you know instead of all the "folktales" you know.
In the legends definition square on the "Folktales Subgenre Chart", it is missing the word "are". Please let me know if you plan on updating and I will download it again.
Thank you for another awesome product and great customer service!! I recently mentioned this product in a blog post too:)

I was wondering if you can create posters for each of the folktales subgenre? I am willing to pay for them.

Hi Daisy,

That is a really good idea! I will put the idea on my list (I have so many ideas!) It is the type of product I would probably offer for free, so no worries about paying, but not sure when I will get to them.

I was wondering if you can label the chart FOLKLORES and include a new row for folktale? I would like to buy it from you. Thank you.

I think that perhaps my definitions are different than the ones you are using. I used several sources which said that Folktale and Folklore are basically synonymous terms, which is why I used Folktales to title the chart. Making another row for folktales would not make sense since the term encompasses all the other genres. I am sorry if this doesn't help you, but I feel that changing it would just make it confusing for most buyers.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Most of my teaching experience is with gifted and talented students in grades 2-4, though I have worked with children of all ages in general education classrooms as well. A few years ago I stopped teaching in order to write nonfiction children's books full time. Gradually over the last couple of years, my career has switched from writing to creating teaching materials here on Teacher Pay Teacher. I love creating teaching products (most recently task cards) and feel just as passionate about my work now as I did when I was teaching. I also love knowing that my products help thousands of teachers and reach tens of thousands of students.
