"Follow Your Thinking Tracks" is a great active reading strategy for students to record their thinking while reading. Not only does it help students monitor their understanding of text, but it provides a post-reading opportunity for students to share and reflect on their "road map" of recorded thoughts - essentially, their thinking tracks! I usually spend at least a week on each strategy in the beginning of the year before having the students use them all together. I model, model, model using think-alouds and shared text (marking the text up with underlining and coding) and SHOW the students how I code and record my thinking. The graphic organizers you choose to use are up to you. I usually start with the individual ones as I introduce each, and then later switch the the blank page with just the thinking bubbles.
