This is a test that I use in conjunction with my food chain project to assess students at the end of our You Are What You Eat: Food Chain and Environments Unit. This test addresses the following "I Can" statements:
-I can describe the role of producers in the food chain in regards to the transfer of energy.
-I can explain the importance of plants to a food chain.
-I can organize a simple food chain or web and recognize the roles of each organism.
-I can summarize that organisms can only survive in an environment in which their needs are met.
-I can describe and support that an organism's behavior depends on various qualities of the ecosystem.
-I can determine how all organisms cause changes in their ecosystems that are either
beneficial, neutral or detrimental.
-I can describe the characteristics of many ecosystems.
This assessment includes questions asked in a variety of ways including multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank and short answer. The questions are challenging and give students the opportunity to think critically about the content.
An answer key and rubric are included in the assessment.

This is my 8th year of teaching. Six of these years have been teaching science and language arts. I spent seven years teaching 5th grade (which I loved!) Now, I am the junior high literacy teacher!
