This is a complete five/six week unit full of experiments and activities to teach about the basic concepts of force and motion - particularly push, pull, friction, and gravity.
In this unit you will receive an introduction to teaching force and motion, material lists, procedures, and data recording forms for NINE experiments, and photos to guide your work all the way. Each section is so comprehensive, that you could even hand it to a substitute teacher, and they would have everything they need (although I selfishly always wanted to do this work with my kids myself - it is so fun!)

I absolutely love these activities. I used the Mouse Trap activity for my scheduled observation and it was amazing. My students had a blast! They really enjoyed building the Marble Race structures as well. Thank you!

I won't be teaching this for another week or two, but it looks excellent. I think my kids are going to LOVE all the hands on science fun. I am at a STEM school and we are just getting 'ramped up' for more science so my feedback is my core science units please!

Thank you! This looks like a lot of fun:) Would a wooden marble ramp be appropriate to use for the first listed experiment? I don't have the marble set up you have but I have a wooden "race" track where the marbles go down back and forth

Hi! Yes, I am sure a wooden marble ramp would work well. The idea is that you need something that the kids can build with that is changeable. If they can create structures with a ramp that challenge gravity as well as things that do not, it will work well. Enjoy!

Great ideas, Mouse Trap game is very hard to accomplish. I wish I didn't buy one. It was a waste of money.

Sorry that Mouse Trap was difficult. Here are a few tips - be sure to not play the game according to the rules in the box. Instead, before working with the students, an adult should put the entire trap together. Then you do the force and motion investigation with the completed trap.
Also, I have noticed that the trap does not always work. If it is not working perfectly, give the parts slight adjustments - like a little jiggle, and see if that helps.
Hope these suggestions help you out.

I have had one user specifically mention using it with second graders successfully. Much of my feedback does not specify grades, so it is hard to say what grades they are using it with. However, I do try to differentiate the unit within the experiments so you could elevate it. It is really up to you!

I have been working with young children since I was sixteen years old, and was a counselor in training at summer camp. After seven years counseling, directing, teaching,and organizing camping and outdoor education programs, I began pursuing my teaching certification. I interned and worked at a Head Start, a daycare, and a Reggio Emilia based child development center with young children, all before finding my home as a kindergarten teacher for the public school system.
