This packet contains a force and motion vocabulary mat with definitions and a simple machines mat with pictures, words, and definitions. 24 vocabulary words include: force, friction, balanced force, unbalanced force, gravity, velocity, acceleration, speed, momentum, lever, pulley, wheel and axle, screw, inclined plane, wedge, etc.
Looking for a different way to have students practice vocabulary for science, I came up with the VOCABULARY MAT idea. Students have a mat of vocabulary words and a set of definitions. They work to place the words on the mat with more and more accuracy. I copy the mat onto cardstock for extra durability. You could also just use the vocabulary mat and definitions as regular flash cards.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am in my 8th year of teaching. Most of my teaching experience has been in 5th grade, but I taught 4th grade for two years and looped with those classes. I have a masters in Curriculum and Instruction in Reading and received National Boards Certification in Middle Childhood. Being an elementary teacher, I teach all subject areas and think about ways to engage children in content through collaboration and discussion.
