I created this 14 page novel study packet to deepen my students' experience with this masterfully written historical fiction novel about the Reconstruction time period. It has been very effective with my students and I have refined it after teaching the novel several times. It is an excellent springboard to integrate your instruction of ELA skills/standards with Social Studies. At the end of our study, my students turn it in for a test grade.
Social Studies topics covered:
Reconstruction, Slavery, 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments, Republicans, Abraham Lincoln, Jim Crow Laws, and more
ELA Skills Included:
cause/effect, direct/indirect characterization, vocabulary, compare/contrast, character analysis, major/minor characters, fact/fiction, tone, point of view, conflict, symbolism, and more.
While generic, I was glad to find things I could use.

Hi there,
Thanks for your question. It does not include tests. I use this packet as an alternative assessment because it covers so many skills and spans quite a lot of class time. In my class, it counts as two test grades.
