Your students will love learning about the concept of equal shares in this fun introduction to fractions. The activities are based on the book The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins. Students create a booklet that follows the story and use chocolate chip cookie manipulatives to divide their cookies fairly between friends.
Concepts covered:
sharing equally
dividing 12 into two, three and four groups
sorting
reading
writing
addition
skip counting
multiplication as repeated addition
division
identifying parts of a total amount
You can celebrate the mastery of fair shares by enjoying freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. In my first grade classroom, we end this lesson with a surprise visit from the principal dressed in an apron and delivering a tray of cookies at the door!
The kids had a lot of fun with this! We are going to make a batch of cookies to share with another class and practice making fair shares also! Thanks for the pack! :)
