I used this activity and activity 2 with my average math class and high math class (6th grade) during the first week of school this past week. It was a great opener that included math as well as community building. I played "musical circles" with it and they shared about the student's circle that they ended up with. My principal walked in and loved it! Thank you.

I know this comes a couple of weeks late, but I have posted an extension activity called Fraction Getting to Know You 2. Students have to solve Fraction Operations before filling in the circle chart. I'm considering other extensions and might try working on them this summer :) Thanks for the encouragement!

You might also want to try my Fraction Getting to Know You 2 where students have to solve basic fraction operations if they've already covered that in 5th grade. If not, perhaps it would be useful near the end of the year!

Good luck with your student teaching. It can be such a difficult profession but it can be just as rewarding! My tip to you is to keep a file of all the nice notes/cards students give to you. When you're ready to give up on teaching, take out the folder and remember how many lives you're enriching.

I am a certified Math/Science teacher. I started teaching in the NC public school system for 4 years, followed by 4 years of private school education in PR.
