This is a comprehensive book group packet based on the novel Freak the Mighty, which is an amazing book with deep themes, tons of voice, and intricate characters. It features guiding questions for students to complete either independently or with teacher support and discuss during guided reading lessons.
This novel unit integrates technology with weekly quizes online. If you have access to technology the kids loved these quizes, but if not they are easy to bypass or you could do them as a whole group during your guided reading meeting.
The novel unit has 6 sections, and I generally have the kids complete one section a week. This one can be condensed if need be, though, so the unit can be completed in 5-6 weeks.
Questions cover a variety of topics, such as theme, figurative language, point of view, vocabulary building, character motive, and much much more. It mixes questions that vary in levels of Bloom's Taxonomy and ask students to really think about their reading.
The beauty of this packet is that as a soft copy you will be able to adjust for different levels and add to or take away from the packet as much as you'd like. Vocabulary questions might have to be adjusted to make the page numbers fit the specific books you are using.
This is a fabulous and engaging book that would work well as a high 4th or 5th grade study, or 6th, 7th, or 8th grade novel unit. Students need tot be pretty mature to really understand the themes.
