This is a great group project that will get students to incorporate everything that they learn during a food and restaurant unit. Students work in groups to create a sales pitch (Argument de Vente). They have 10 minutes (change at your will) to present their concept for a restaurant to a group of judges (I use other teachers in the school who can understand this level of French). They must include ideas for the style and decor, the place setting, uniforms, a menu, a chef, and one prepared specialty of the house for the judges to test. This is all explained to the judges in French(I have allowed note cards, but try to get them to memorize or speak freely if they are able). This is a great way to have them use everything that they learn throughout a food unit, and it's a great alternative to skits. Included with the explanation and expectation sheet for students is a a sheet with useful phrases and vocabulary to use during the presentation as well as an in-depth rubric (in English) for the judges. Kids love this and look forward to it. It's lots of fun.

Does your French food and restaurant project have a vocabulary list? How many items does that include? I am thinking of using it with my French 1 students as an end-of-the year project. Do you think it would be appropriate for that level (high school freshmen and sophomores).

Hello,
This is a great end-of-year project. I did not include an extensive list of food vocabulary as many textbooks include this information. It does, however, include a sheet on presentation vocabulary, sentences, and phrases to help them with the presentation. I have done done this with 7th and 8th grade classes and it has worked very well. They respond particularly well to having judges other than the teacher to whom they can show off their language skills. I also provide the judges with the rubric ahead of time. If yo need a food/restaurant vocabulary list I can provide you with that.

I have been teaching World Language (French, Spanish, Italian) at the elementary, middle and high school levels for 16 years. I regularly present foreign language teaching methodology workshops at state, regional and national conferences and in teacher preparation programs at various universities. I have spent time volunteering in schools in impoverished areas of Nicaragua and a portion of the money earned through TPT is used to buy school supplies (pencils, paper, books) for students at the Panama School in La Concha, Nicaragua.
