Here's a fun little French activity for the first week of school. Beginning language learners--and even the "veterans"--can get to know their classmates while practicing greetings and the French alphabet. First, students will need to choose a French name to use for the year. Then it's time to play FRENCH NAME BINGO! First, students use conversational skills to ask classmates their name and how to spell it . . . all in French, of course! Then they can write that name on a bingo grid. Next, the teacher spells out names of various students in the class. Anyone who wrote it down can X it off of their bingo grid. Kids of all ages love having their name called, not to mention a little "bonbon" as a prize. You'll receive two versions of this activity with various sized grids appropriate for different sized classes. Simply print and go! This is a successful Week 1 activity year after year.

I think it is more useful to have students spell each other's last names instead of their first names, except for the fact that there are little to no accents in the last names. But I have found it much more difficult for students to understand each other when spelling the last names in French. So, that shows that they do not have the command of the alphabet necessary to be understood and the name bingo should be helping to improve that. Bref, I have not seen that it helps improve pronunciation of the letters with asking the spelling of the first names. Thank you.

Great point! You can still modify the directions of the activity and have students spell last names instead of first. Or perhaps both!
