This is a fun freebie! Students do the written portion of the book report on the outside of a large grocery bag, and then place five items inside the bag to symbolize main characters, setting or events from the book. Students love these!!

Enjoy,

Thank you for your responses. Again, I think it's a GREAT idea, and I'm suggesting to her teacher that perhaps it should be scaled back a bit for her students in the future. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for your feedback. There is no way to mark "later in the year" for the third or fourth grades. I have used this assignment with fourth grade with great success. I really think that third grade teachers can use it as well, once the elements have been taught. Also, what the teacher assigns on the outside of the bag can easily be modified to fit her students and instruction. I'm sorry it was so challenging for your family - it really is meant to be a fun approach to a book report. You have given your teacher good feedback. I'm sure she will adjust it in the future.

The paper bag book report. Her teacher printed out from this download exactly as you designed it, not scaled back at all, and your product overview marks it as appropriate for third and fourth graders. She is in a second grade advanced program, but she couldn't understand half of the directions without help from Mom & Dad.

I can see third graders doing it later in the year after a lot of training. There are so many elements of literature in it - it seems quite advanced for second grade - especially this early in the year. It is a great assignment once the various elements have been taught. Also, I give my students plenty of time to complete it.

My second grade daughter (Cambridge Program) received this exact assignment the way you have it shown, with no alterations. I thought it was a great idea until I read the directions. What second grader (or third, or perhaps even fourth, for that matter) could follow these instructions and derive the answers without considerable help? It took my daughter twelve hours to complete the assignment and that was with her mother and I explaining and re-explaining what the directions meant.

Which assignment are you referring to? Most of my projects are designed for 5th and 6th grade students. They can be scaled back for younger students, but I wouldn't assign them to 2nd grade students.
