This activity can be used as a reading comprehension assessment after the students have learned geography terms or it can be used as a geography assessment. Students read a short story based on the novel Kensuke's Kingdom, then fill in the blanks using geography terms. They don't have to be familiar with the novel because it's all based on context clues and geography terms. Included is a student worksheet with a blank answer sheet, questions that are responses to text and a map to label. Answer sheet and teacher ideas included.

I've been an elementary and middle school teacher for over 25 years in Connecticut. I also served on the Weekly Reader National Teacher Advisory Board as the Connecticut State Rep and appeared on "Good Morning, America" in 1993, to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Weekly Reader. I worked closely with the other state representatives and Weekly Reader's editorial, graphic arts and marketing departments. I was a NASA/Lockheed Martin Mission Systems "Student Signatures in Space" teacher for ten years. My students, Board of Ed, staff and others signed NASA posters that accompanied astronauts during space missions aboard the space shuttles. One of the posters was signed by all students in our school, teachers, parents and the Board of Ed. It returned from space, and was hung in the school's Media Center.
