"Give Us Peace"

Words and Music by Ash Kizer
Copyright © 2008

The colonists fought and won their independence in 1783
In the Revolutionary War.
As someone has said, you get what you have paid for,
And freedom is not free.
But will we have to pay some more?

Chorus:
Stop fighting, stop fighting, stop fighting
And give us peace.

In no time at all we fought with Britain again
Over seas and borders and trade
In the war of eighteen hundred and twelve.
In the Mexican War we were fighting for Texas
And Californ-i-a
Antonio Santa Anna's army fell. It's just as well.

(Chorus)

In eighteen and sixty after Lincoln's election
The southern states rebelled
In what we now call the Civil War,
And 30 years later we were fighting with Spain
In the Spanish-American War
We got Guam, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico.

Bridge:
(You might be) the bully in the schoolyard, or
The burglar at the bank;
The little boys with rocks in their hands
Throwing them at the tanks.
Maybe we could just flip a coin,
Or play a game of chess.
Anything that doesn't leave
Our lives in such a mess.
This fighting ain't gonna solve anything.
This fighting ain't gonna change a cotton-picking thing.

The First World War began when Serbia assassinated
Archduke Ferdinand
The sequel was worse than the first
We had to fight Germany and Japan.

The Cold War was fought against the USSR
It was a series of events.
The Korean and Vietnam Wars
Were overseen by our presidents.

(Chorus)

Bush senior was president when we told Iraq
To quit picking on Kuwait.
In five days we won the Persian Gulf War
But we never won because in 2001
We were attacked by people of hate,
The War on Terrorism was more and more; let's end the story.

(Chorus)
