Glaciers fascinate children, almost as much as dinosaurs! This unit contains multidisciplinary materials in the core subject areas, including an accompanying Power Point show, Glaciers of the Canadian Rockies, which will generate a lot of enthusiasm and interest in glaciers and the national parks. The PowerPoint itself concludes with a web quest activity on glacier terminology that you and your students will enjoy. Based around the included original short story, the multidisciplinary unit is intended for grades 4 rough 7, depending upon student ability. The following lessons and activities are included, along with a complete teacher guide and answer sheet:
• An original short story about a girl who explores a glacier, only to discover the ancient remains of early man
• Vocabulary/context lesson with a writing activity
• Reading comprehension lesson with a writing extension
• Journalism lesson on the 5 W’s with a writing extension
• Map study of Canada
• Math word problems related to the movement of glaciers: multiplication, division, addition, subtraction
• Creating a timeline of the 5 ice ages
It is my hope that you and your students will enjoy this unit of study. Your feedback is important to me, as I plan to generate more multidisciplinary units for your use. Look for them in the coming weeks.
