This unit emphasizes vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension skills including ordering important events, recalling details, and recognizing character traits.
Grasshopper On The Road is a set of six allegorical tales written by noted children's author Arnold Lobel. Grasshopper is an Everyman character who meets six other insects as he walks down the road. Each one teaches him - and the child reading the book - an important lesson about life. These lessons include the need to tolerate those whose views are different from your own and the importance of taking the time to appreciate the beauty of the world around you. While the young reader with end-of-first/beginning-of-second-grade reading skills may not fully appreciate these lessons, they will still be able to enjoy the stories on a literal level.
