In the beginning of the year many kindergartners really can't handle the computer center. This is the perfect way to get them familiar with the computer and help them with their letter recognition! I take each book and laminate the pages. Then I bind them with the binding machine. I have been using mine for years and they are still in great shape. I keep these books in a basket next to the computer. During literacy centers, when a student goes to the computer he/she chooses a book and types as many words and he/she can in the time alloted. All you need to do is open a word document. Choose a font, make it pretty or colorful if you want. Definitely make it BIG so the kids can see what they are typing, and let them type away! My student LOVE this center. It is great to see them naming and searching for letters (perfect for letter recognition). The book included are: Animals, Shapes, Food, Toys, and Colors. There is also a recording sheet included so students can mark off how many words they typed and take it home to show their parents:)

Great idea for Ks or Gr. 1s! And thank you for putting the words in CAPITALS! I like the letters/words to look like what the students will be looking for on the keyboard! The Ks still have a hard time finding letters if they are not in upper case!

I was a stay at home mom with our first 3 sons. In that time I volunteered in the classroom as much as I could. That is what sparked my desire to go back to school to be a teacher. I started teaching Pre-K for a year. Then after graduating, I subbed in all grades for about 6 months. That confirmed my dreams of being a kindergarten teacher as none of the other grades excited me the way kindergarten did. I was lucky enough to snag a kindergarten job from the get-go and am now about to start my 8th year of teaching those cute kinders!
