PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Reading Olympians teaches 100 Greek roots (prefixes and suffixes) and contains over 300 pages of resources! Reading Olympians is a valuable resource for educators and home schoolers. The program breaks 100 roots into 10 sets and each group is named after a Greek figure. When a student masters a set, he/she becomes a member of that group-for example the Nike or Poseidon group. When they master all 10 sets the become an Olympian!! Roots are now in Common Core K-8! There are fun extensions of the program on our website as well as examples of Reading O in action in classrooms across the country!

http://readingolympian.blogspot.com/

The program includes 310 pages of materials:
*word wall cards for student to illustrate
*root ring cards to provide individual resource student
*graphic organizers
*assessments
*activity to utilize the roots
*chants to help learn each root
* group guides for each set
*award to present when a set of roots is mastered
*data binder material for students
*organizational materials for teachers

The program includes detailed instructions, and website support, to implement in your classroom. Please visit our website to get an idea of how the program works! You will be AMAZED at what learning the roots will do for your students' vocabulary and they love learning them! Reading Olympians is easily implemented in your classroom any time of the school year. We would love to answer any questions you may have! We are currently working on updating our information to include 6th grade common core standards!

Why teach the roots?

*Research strongly supports the teaching of roots to increase vocabulary
*Roots are learning objectives of the new Common Core Standards
*Learning one root is a gateway to a multitude of words
*Roots provide at risk readers with an increased meaningful vocabulary and higher readers with a deep understanding of the language

FOR EXAMPLE: autobiography: auto (self) bio (life) graph(write)

**DISCLAIMER** Our product is not based on the true Greek Mythological characters of the Olympians

This is phenomenal! I just stumbled upon it randomly, and I LOVE it!!!

Is it possible for me to get a hold of a version where I can make minor changes? (So, NOT a PDF)??? It's just for little things like making the raps all the same syncopation (because I’m weird like that), or trading the root aqua (currently in Athena) will something in Poseidon (like bene- or something…). Please let me know!

Thanks again for a wonderful product!

This is wonderful. I was so excited to introduce this to the school. This is going to be so much fun!

There is one thing that I wish, I wish you would have put the websites to buy the necklaces and tags on there. While I was browsing teacherspayteachers.com, I found them. However, I just went to the local craft store and found necklace strands for 20 cents each.

I downloaded an available small, free version of this program as I wanted to see how my students took to it and how I enjoyed teaching it. Clearly I'm back! The kids were clamoring for more and were upset to find out that I didn't have the next set. I currently teach 5th grade, but could see this being used in a middle school setting as well. I cannot wait to return to school on Monday with additional units, and, oddly, I know the kids will be excited, too!

I, too, would love a file that could be altered. Other than that this is a wonderful program to use. My school had adopted another program which I abandoned because it wasn't user friendly, too old school. This one is easy to use, the kids love the graphics and raps, and they love that they go through it at their own pace.

Hi, three questions before I hit "purchase"....
1. Is The Common Core Sory of Greek Roots...." included in the Reading Olympians big packet? It would make a great Smatboard intro!
2. Is the Root of the Day material part of the big packet?
3. Can I start with the Reading Olympians and skip the Junior edition? If so, do you have a list of roots that I could catch the kids up with?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  March 29, 2014The Reading Olympians answered:
Hi!
1. The story is not included however it is very similar to the proactive reader story that was included with the presentation if you email us we can send you the file so you can display it on your smartboard!
2. Root of the day is not included in the big packet.
3. You can definitely skip the jr. Program it includes many of the same roots but just presented in a way formatted for younger kids. Olympians is a great place to begin and what I use with my 2nd graders!

Thanks so much! You can email us at readingolympians@gmail.com
On  November 6, 2013Tammy Ratajczak (TpT Seller) asked:
Hello! I have already purchased the first 4 sets and just realized you have all of them for sale in a bundle. Is there any way I can pay the difference to receive the rest of them? I believe the first set was free, and since then I have spent about $10.50 for the other three packets. Can I pay you the additional $4.50 to receive the rest? I really don't want to spend an additional $15.00 on top of the $10.50 I already spent. It would be greatly appreciated. BTW...my students are loving this program!

I just purchased this product but am a little "in the dark" about this necklace and reading beads that is mentioned. Are these included in the bundle? Not too sure what they look like. Can you help me out with this? Thanks!

The materials for the necklace are not included, please visit our blog for details on how we incorporate the necklaces. The success of the program does not depend on the use of the necklaces, just a fun bonus:)

On  October 14, 2013The Reading Olympians answered:
The key ring cards are the smaller cards. We punch a hole in the corner if the cards and out them in a silver ring. These are great for independent review if students have a few jets to spare in between activities.

I purchased this program and am very pleased and will certainly use it this year. However, I believe it's missing an important component which I will need to create. There needs to be more practice dissecting the prefixes/suffixes/root out of multi-syllabic words to determine new vocab definitions. I wish this included more practice and more in-depth assessment where perhaps there was a nonsense word incorporating several prefixes/suffixes/roots to determine if students could put the practice into real world use... otherwise it's just a skill in isolation that doesn't translate into better readers.

On  August 4, 2013The Reading Olympians answered:
First, we are happy you are pleased with the program. Honestly, we are still staggered at the power these little roots hold for our readers.

Next, at the onset of the program you are correct this is a skill based program. Our goal was to first create programs K-8 to introduce the actual concept of roots as well as roots themselves.

Though not paper pencil activities, one main objective of the program is to find roots in stuents' daily interaction with words. As they accomplish this they earn reading beads. This encourages students to be on the "hunt" for roots at all times. This fosters a great deal of higher level thinking as they must apply what they know about roots. We have found that once root instruction takes place, higher level thinking is inherent. The students fly with their new found understanding and command of the language.

Also, please take a peak at our Christmas Unit. This is a fun way to do exactly what you suggested. We are currently completing similar activities for everyday use:)

Thanks for your comments. Watching the program in action has led us to become truly passionate in sharing the importance of root instruction with teachers. We are always open to learn how to improve!

I feel a little awkward commenting again, but something else I noticed...On the Nike Raps there were a couple where you "emphasized" the prefix in the rap (i.e. UNfit, UNlikely, UNtrue, SUBmarine) but it wasn't done consistently on any of the other raps in Nike or other sets. Personally, I liked seeing the emphasis...I feel it is a good method of helping the students "see" the relationship of the affix or root in the word. Would that be something to consider? I'm sure it would be a lot of work, but I think it might prove to be helpful for the students. Again, thanks for the product. It definitely has much to offer.

I think this program is much more well-rounded and the students will have fun searching for words containing their current roots! I do want to let you know about something little that I came across on page 32 and 35-37... the blue box around the perimeter of the page on page 32 actually cuts off part of the text box at the bottom (for roots mis- and -ness) On pages 35-37, it lies right on top of the bottom of the text boxes at the bottom of the page.

Thanks for you interest in the program:)

When we introduce each root we brainstorm words that contain that root. We have a list in our plans in case they struggle with coming up with them. Some are more challenging than others. They will get in a swing of it as they practice. Others that use the program have a student that guides small groups by having a list or using the computer as a resource. There are numerous sites that list roots. I will tell you that we are working on a teacher's resource guide that included words. We are adding additions as the program has gained in popularity. The parent letter should be there, we did reorganize the format of the file and if it is not---it should be! Please email me at twingirlsceej@aol.com and I will send it right to you and update the product on TPT. The word wall cards are may be my favorite part of the program. They drew a school to represent "graph" means to write or draw. When our kiddos illustrate a root they also present it to the class so we are all on the same page:)

PLEASE email us with any questions!! The program become totally embedded in all you do as your students see that roots are everywhere and in every content area. The only disadvantage is you will have root obsessed students:)

I teach 7th grade Science, and our kids really struggle with vocabulary. Will your product be beneficial to my middle school kids?

On  October 12, 2012The Reading Olympians answered:
Thanks for your interest. Here's some details on the program --we hope it helps:)

The original program-Reading Olympians-is based on 100 Greek and Latin roots. These are not content based. We were amazed what it did for our kiddos and it became popular enough we decided to create Reading Warriors. Reading Warriors reviews 50 roots from the Olympian program and 50 new roots. These 50 are content based for science, math and social studies--heavy on science and math. Here's why I think it would be cool for your kids. Not only will it help them define their vocabulary words-but they will look at words completely differently. Here are 2 example: just today Julie was teaching a math lesson introducing fractions. When she told them they told her "fract" means to break apart and "tion" means process of. My experience was I told them to look at a different perspective and they realized "spect" means to see--so it is looking or seeing a different point of view. We have these moments multiple times a day as our student see words through the eyes of roots.

We are not super objective about root instruction...LOL. We deeply believe in root instruction and believe it can improve any content area. If you would like any more information please feel free to email us at twingirlsceej@aol.com.

If you feel you may want to give it a try please make certain to purchase Reading Warriors!!! Thanks:)
