PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

UPDATED on April 6, 2014- Same product, but just received a facelift. :)

Of all of my units, I think I am MOST proud of this one! As I have been teaching the common core standards for 4th grade this year, I noticed that there are two standards in particular that address Greek Mythology.

If your class is anything like mine, they LOVE Greek Mythology! They are all into the Percy Jackson books and The Heroes of Olympus series. So, needless to say that they were SUPER excited about this unit!

In this unit you will find:
-Teacher's Notes
-Schema chart instructional materials (to activate prior knowledge, record new learning, and misconceptions)
-Greek Myth Tree Map
-Venn Diagram to Compare/Contrast Myths (several instructional uses included)
-Greek terminology that is used in today's language (meets specifically 4th grade common core standards)
-Greek terminology (allusions) booklet for the kids to make (the allusions are from popular myths like King Midas, Pandora's Box, Hercules, etc.)
-Greek Myth Allusions Assessment
-Story Map to determine characters, main events, problem, solution, theme of myths
-12 Character Trait Maps for various mythological characters
-A "Herculean" Summary sheet to practice summarizing texts
-Directions and ideas for projects and writing activities
-Greek Mythology Trading Cards activity and rubric
-Important Poem Writing Activity
-Various planning sheets and stationery for writing activities (ideas included)
-Helpful resources and website links for materials
-Outline of how I used the materials in my classroom
-Terms and Credits page

Although I created this unit for my 4th graders, it could easily used for other grades as well.

I hope you enjoy this unit as much as my students and I have.

What is the difference between this unit and the other greek mythology unit ($13) that you offer? Are all of these activities included in your larger unit?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  April 2, 2014Nicole Shelby answered:
Hi Tara,

The first unit that I created (the cheaper of the two) offers activities that can be used with just about any Greek mythology book or materials you have. It focuses more on the allusions or phrases that are derived from Greek Mythology. The other unit (the more expensive one) is a collection of elementary appropriate myths. I found that as I was searching for Greek myths to use in my classroom, the myths were not appropriate due to the "adult content". There are a few activities included that go along with the materials in this unit, but the major focus of this unit is the stories. I use the units together, but they can both be used a stand alones. The descriptions of each will tell you what is included in each one.

Hope this helps!

Thanks,
Nicole

On  July 8, 2012Nicole Shelby answered:
Hi Carolyn,

The unit does not include "actual" read aloud books, but it does contain a list of read aloud books that I use with the unit. The books are very easy to find. I checked my copies out from my local library, but they are available for purchase on Amazon and other book sites as well.

I hope this answers your question completely. Please let me know if I can be of any other assistance. Thanks for your interest in my product.

Hi Mindy,

I don't know why it is appearing fuzzy. Have you printed it yet? Did it print out fuzzy? Either way, if you email me at nicoleshelby@hotmail.com, I will email that page to you and maybe that will correct the problem. :)

On  March 18, 2014Nicole Shelby answered:
Have you purchased the unit? If so, there is an outline of the lessons. I adjust this unit every year according to my students' needs, but I think the unit plan is divided out into 8-9 days. You could spend longer, as I typically do.

I'm having a hard time opening this document. When I go to download the file, it tries to open in Windows Photo Viewer. .. but it wont open. I was wondering if you have this in doc.x, and could email it to me?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  February 22, 2014Nicole Shelby answered:
Hi Crystal,

This is a zip file, so you will need to make sure the file is "unzipped". TpT offers advice for how to open zip files at this link: https://support.teacherspayteachers.com/What-a-ZIP-file-c46-a88.html

If you email me at nicoleshelby@hotmail.com, I will be more than happy to email the file to you. I can send it as one large pdf, which sometimes makes it difficult for printing because it is so heavy in graphics. This is the reason I broke the file up into several pdfs and zipped them in a folder. I will not be able to send the file in a doc version. This would violate the terms of use on the graphics in the file.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Thanks,
Nicole

Nicole, I love your products. I purchased both Greek Mythology items on tpt. I downloaded the stories with no problem. I have had trouble downloading the unit...do you have any suggestions? Thanks Jennifer
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  February 20, 2014Nicole Shelby answered:
Hi Jennifer,

I am not sure what issues you are actually having with downloading. It is a zipfile, I don't know if that is the difference??? If you are actually having issues with it downloading from TpT itself, you can go to your "My Purchases" page, click on "downloading difficulties" and they will email the file to you. Also, this blog post offers suggestions with downloading as well. http://2ndgradestuff.blogspot.com/2013/04/help-i-cant-save-or-print-my-tpt-file.html

I am offering several suggestions because I don't know specifically what the downloading issue is. I hope one of these suggestions will work for you.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

Hi Nicole,

I have a question about your "Schema" activity for day one. Are the students just putting down what they think they know about Greek myths on sticky notes or do you have them fill out the "My Schema" sheet? In your picture it looks like sticky notes.

Thanks,

Nancy
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  December 14, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
Hi Nancy,

Actually, I had to them do both. I have the kids use their "Schema" sheet to write ALL they thought they knew about myths. Then, the kids picked one "fact" from their sheet and put it on a post-it note to share with the class. I took up the schema sheets and saved them. At the end of the unit, I have them fill out what they have learned and compare their schema prior to the unit and their learning at the end. I hope this helps clarify.

Thanks,

Hello! Quick question-I noticed you have two Mythology units. Is one of them a bundle? In other words, is it necessary to purchase both? If I can only purchase one at this time, which do you recommend?

On  December 10, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
I don't offer the files as a bundle. They are separate. I use them together, but you don't have to have both. They are really different. One has actually myths for the students to use. The other unit offers materials to use with myths and focuses on the allusions. There are no stories included in the one that is $7.25. I can't recommend one over the other because they are different, so it depends more on what you are looking for. Like I said, I use them both. :)

Please let me know if you have any other questions. I would be happy to help.

Hi Joyce,

I am sorry you are having issues. I will do my best to offer some suggestions...my list of "fix-its" is kind of short as I am not a technological guru and I have limited information about what exactly is happening when you are trying to download.

Some things you might try:
* Download the file from TpT in a different browser.

This is a zip file, so here is a tutorial on how to open zip files from Ashley Hughes.
http://www.theschoolsupplyaddict.com/1/post/2012/11/technology-tuesday-6.html

This blog post by Jamie Rector has a lot of suggestions for common problems that buyers have.
http://www.2ndgradestuff.blogspot.com/2013/04/help-i-cant-save-or-print-my-tpt-file.html

If all else fails, please contact TpT for technical support. But, I really hope that the tutorial from Ashley Hughes will help solve the problem.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Thank you,

Here are the CCSS covered in this unit:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.4.2 Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.4.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology (e.g., Herculean).

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.4.9 Compare and contrast the treatment of similar themes and topics (e.g., opposition of good and evil) and patterns of events (e.g., the quest) in stories, myths, and traditional literature from different cultures.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.4.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, in the grades 4–5 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

I use both units together. The one you don't have focuses on introducing myths, allusions, and has several writing activities. You can check out my blog www.teachingwithblondeambition.blogspot.com to see more of this unit in action.

Hi,
I'm thinking about purchasing this unit. However, I teach 6th grade in the middle school and I will have varying reading levels in each class (ranging from 2nd grade-highschool level readers). Can this unit be adapted for these various levels?
Also, I will be called "Project based Learning ELA' next year. Do you think this unit will fit that title?
Thanks so much for any help you can give me with these questions.

Hi Heidi,

I will be honest, I don't recommend my materials for middle school, but have been surprised that some middle school teachers have bought and used this unit. This unit offers several "project based" learning activities such as trading cards for favorite mythological characters and several writing activities. However, I know there are a few activities in this unit that I think would be too elementary. I guess to answer your question, if you buy this unit, know there will be a couple of the activities you might not be able to use because it is specifically designed for 4th graders.

I am not sure this helps you any. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks so much!

Hi Marc,

The Greek mythology unit based on the Common Core Standards is a unit that focuses on the allusions/phrases that are found in mythology. There are activities to go along with the stories like King Midas, Pandora's Box, etc. This unit just has ideas and activities.

As a teacher, I found it difficult to find myths that were appropriate for fourth grade. If you are familiar with Greek mythology at all, you know that the stories talk about drinking, extramarital affairs, etc. These stories just contain inappropriate issues for an elementary age student, so I took the popular myths and basically rewrote the stories to make them appropriate. All of the stories are written at a lexile level rigorous enough for 4th-5th grade students. There are some addition activities that are not included in my original unit. These units may be used independently or ideally together.

Please let me know if you have any more questions. I would be glad to answer them.

Thanks for your interest in my products.

Hello Nicole, I am unable to open the files I just purchased using the unzipping file. Is there another way to open these gems? I know I am going to love the materials and I can't wait to make my plans using the Mythology unit and Forces and Motion. I think I purchased 3 unzipping files. I have a new MacAir and thought this wouldn't be a problem. I have great success with pdf files.
Thanks ahead of time.

Hello,
I am also having problems with downloading the mythology unit to print. I have tried all the suggestions on the previous posts. I have attempted to open it on several different computers as well and it freezes up when trying to print.
Are you able to email the unit and I can try that?
Thanks,

On  March 1, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
Hi Sarah,

I just checked the download on two different computers and it opened with no issues, so I don't know exactly how to fix the problem because not everyone is having issues. The file is quite large, so I included a pdf file of the whole unit and then pdfs of the unit broken into smaller pieces. Have you tried printing the smaller pieces rather than the entire unit at once? Another trick to try is when printing, instead of sellecting all pages on the printer options, select defined pages like 1-12. One other trick to try is when you go to print, click on the advance button and choose to print as an image.

I think if you try these things, it should fix your problem. If not, please send me your email address and I will email the file to you. This is the option that I would prefer to use as a last resort because the file is so large, I have to send it though a site like Dropbox.

Thanks,
Nicole

Hi Nicole,

I tried the suggestions but when I go to print it just spins. It will not even load. I can not get anything to print. Is it possible to get it sent seperately to see if there is a way to print it? I downloaded it to my harddrive but it still does not work. Could it be that it is a locked PDF? Can it be sent seperately so the file is not so large? I am not computer savy so these are just thoughts. Thanks!

On  January 15, 2013Nicole Shelby answered:
The file is currently saved as a zipped file. It is already broken up into smaller portions. It is not a locked pdf. Have you extracted the file? You can download the file, right click on the file, and choose extract file.

I promise the file does download and print correctly, so if the above solution does not work, I would suggest contacting TpT technical support for other advice because I have shared all of the tricks I know to issues that either I have had with files I have purchased or that other buyers have had.

I am so sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks,
Nicole

Hi There!

I am so sorry to hear that you are having technical difficulties. You have just got to love technology.  I have had one other incident where a buyer could not get the document to print. Her issue was that she didn’t have the latest Adobe Reader installed. You can get the free download here http://www.adobe.com/downloads/

Another option is to try rightclicking on the download link and saving the target (PC) or link (Mac) to your desktop. Sometimes saving the document to your computer versus trying to print from TpT will solve the issue.

Also, if you would prefer, I can try emailing you the document. That might work.

The last option I have is to contact TpT techincal support for answers. I have contacted them several times and they are wonderful and speedy with responses.

I am so sorry you are having problems, but we will work it out! :) I have sold MANY copies of this packet and users have been able to download it and use it, so I know it’s just a technical issue that can be resolved. Just let me know what I can do from this point.

Thank you so much!

What unit did you use this with? For instance Unit 1 Tales of the Heart. Do you have lesson plans that you would be willing to sale also?

On  May 6, 2012Nicole Shelby answered:
Hi MB,
I am not sure what you mean by what unit did I use this with? Are you talking about the Bill Gates' maps? If so, we do not use those. Our district has mapped out the standards per nine weeks and the teachers choose how they want to go about teaching the standards. I can't remember which unit it was that taught myths, but it was either 5 ot 6 if you are trying to use those. As far as lesson plans go, I am not sure when you purchased the unit, but I added a lesson plan outline at the end of the unit just last weekend. Does your unit contain those? If not, you can download the updated version of the unit under the my purchases tab. If you download the updated unit and still have questions, please email me at nicoleshelby@hotmail.com and I will be glad to answer your questions.

Thanks so much!
