Someone contacted me recently and asked for a test on Grendel. I offered to write a short-answer test and post it on TeachersPayTeachers. (Unfortunately, since I do not have the teacher's name or email, I am unable to contact her.)
I re-read the book this weekend and started writing a test, but I gave up. Because of the plot and difficult names, the novel does not lend itself to a short-answer test. As a result, the questions I initially considered were either too easy or so difficult that students who read the book would have trouble answering them.
If I were testing students on the novel, I would give the attached 50-minute in-class essay test and allow students to use their books. Free

I worked in schools either as a middle school teacher, high school teacher, or administrator for over thirty years. Most of my experience has been in high school English classrooms. I have taught everything from ninth-grade literature to students with major reading problems all the way to AP English Language and Composition teacher. Although I love teaching, I retired at the end of the 2009-2010 school year when over 500 teachers in my district lost their jobs because of the bad economy. I'm praying that the economy will improve and I will be able to find another teaching job in high school or college in the future.
