Guided reading questions to be used with John Steinbeck's The Pearl. Questions provide practice with finding evidence in the text, beginning literary analysis, using context clues to define vocabulary and making inferences. Each chapter has 4-6 multi-part questions designed to assist students in breaking down the text and making meaning beyond literal comprehension of the story.
Please note that on page 3 of the document (chapter 2, question 3) I deliberately mention students' propensity to copy from each other ("Remember, there is no right answer. I am interested in what you think—so it won’t help you to copy either.") This has, sadly, always been applicable in my classes, but certainly delete this if your audience would be upbraided by this warning.
There is no "answer key" included because so many of the questions are designed to have multiple answers and facilitate discussion and discovery. If you have any questions or concerns about a particular question, please feel free to email me.
Pages numbers noted are from the Penguin version: please check your version for accuracy of the citations.
If you have any questions or feedback or find a typo or other error (yikes!), I would appreciate an email so that I can make corrections.
Enjoy! Kristin Steeger, klsr@comcast.net
