Are your students tired of practice pages where they reduce fractions again and again? Then try some Halloween Fraction Riddles. In this six page handout, specific words are provided. The students are to figure out the correct fractional part of each particular word. (Example: The first 1/3 of LEDGER which would be LE.) If the fractional part is correctly identified, when the students write the fractional parts on the lines provided, a new word is created.
Each group of new words becomes a Halloween riddle. There are eight Halloween riddles all together which means there are eight ways for the students to practice identifying fractional parts in lowest terms. Instead of completing all eight at once, try dividing the puzzles up and using one each day as a focus activity, or intersperse them throughout the month of October. Answers are included at the end of the handout.

I have used all these Halloween Fractions as bellringer or focus activities. The kids really enjoy searching out the the riddles and when they figure it out, there are usually two reactions. The first is "Ooooh," when it all sinks in, and the second one is "That's really fun! Can we do another one?" I've also used the Valentine Fraction handout as well as the March one, and I always get a great reaction from my students.
