This seasonal activity emphasizes math skills including sorting, creating and interpreting graphs, greater and less than, and addition and subtraction. It turns one of most children’s favorite holidays into a fun learning experience.
Students are first asked to sort their candy into six different groups. These groups have been brainstormed and agreed upon by their whole class prior to trick-or-treating. Students then fill in a graph to show how many pieces of candy they received in each group.
When students bring their Halloween Homework back to school, they compare their data with that of their classmates in small groups and as a whole class. A second graph is created to show which category of candy was most frequently received by the greatest number of students. Comparisons and addition and subtraction problems can then be created by the whole class using this new data.
Halloween can often be a weeklong distraction for excited children. Halloween Homework helps the teacher turn some of that excitement into a truly teachable moment! Detailed instructions for its use are included.
