Kids love Halloween and this product will help them write interesting, well organized stories to celebrate this favorite time of year. It can be easily differentiated to use with all elementary aged students from Kindergarten to Grade 6. The file contains 4 parts:
A Halloween Word Wall with 28 words to help students generate ideas and learn the vocabulary necessary to write their stories.
A story organizer for beginning writers. Students are asked to draw pictures of the beginning, middle and end of the story and then write 2-3 sentences about each picture. The format is flexible. For students who are capable of writing longer stories, they can simply add as many "middle" pages as they like to their story. In the end, the children end up with an illustrated story that they can staple into a book. They can even add a title page if they like. This format helps students organize their thoughts and helps them lay out a story step by step.
For older students, there is a 4-page organizer for them to consider the characters, setting, problem and solution(or climax) and overall plot of the story. Here students will brainstorm the essential elements of a story as well as interesting language to use in their writing.
Finally a list of 20 story starters is included, especially helpful for those kids who can't seem to get started because they don't have an idea.

I have been teaching for 20 years in a variety of school systems. 20 years ago I spent 4 years teaching ESL overseas and upon my return home to Canada I then spent 4 years teaching French Immersion in K, 1, 4, 5. This was followed by teaching Grade 1 for 5 years at an international school Japan with a large and varied ESL population mixed in with native speakers of English. I am now back in Canada teaching Grade 1 French Immersion again.
