Number sums and products are abstract concepts that cannot be easily associated with visual objects and are, therefore, very difficult facts to memorize. Two readily available and familiar visual objects, the hands, can form an association with number sums and products that enables a much easier memorization process to occur. One alternative to rote memorization is to have the students verify the addition and multiplication facts using their hands as a calculator. Through repetition of the procedures, the addition and multiplication facts will be memorized and thereby relieve the distress that many students would otherwise feel when recall fails.
