The Heart Map is a great lesson to kick off your Writer's Workshop or writing block for the year! Have students fill out each piece of the heart with a drawing of something close to their hearts (favorite activity, memorable vacation, family, friends, favorite book, etc). This sheet will be used throughout the year to inspire writing, which teaches the students that many authors get inspiration for their writing from things that they love. If students are ever experiencing writer's block, I remind them to look at their Heart Map to give them some inspiration.

If I were using this for kindergarten, do you have any children's books you think would be appropriate to read with this lesson?
I'm not sure about kindergarten. For the upper grades though, I know that the PERFECT book for writing workshop is the Amelia books by Marissa Moss. http://www.marissamoss.com/books.php?series=amelia
I'm sorry I can't really help with the lower grades book recommendation. I think that a lot of personal narratives could work though.
