Hearts and Valentines is a 13 page handout that features 24 heart rebuses which represent familiar expressions that contain the word "heart". (e.g. "From the Bottom of My Heart" or "Cross My Heart") Each illustration uses a picture or symbol to represent a word or phrase. The students must use logic and reasoning skills to solve the 24 rebuses.
Just copy the 12 pages of illustrations (two per page) using a color copier. If you do not have access to a color copier, you can enhance the hearts by hand coloring them. Each day during th month of February, put up one Heart illustration as a student focus activity, OR, if you choose, place two or three up at one time or all of them up at the same time. Students are to figure out which Heart expression the picture represents. It can be fun, but also a very challenging Valentine's Day activity!
The answers are included on page 14 of the handout.

This activity is one I plan to use each February; the are artwork on each heart is creative and causes the kids enough consternation that they want to come up with the answer. It's a lot of fun especially with eighth graders, who are sensitive about love. Great focus activity!

I have been teaching since "the earth cooled". My husband is a teacher as well, and together we have over 75 years of teaching in the elementary, middle school, high school and college areas. My focus is mathematics while my husband's is science. We never want to do anything else because we love it! My teaching style is hands-on and energetic while using diverse teaching strategies.
