This thirty-four page resource for teching Carl Hiaasen's 2003 Newbery Honor Book has three components.
First are PREREADING ITEMS, which include group discussion ideas, individual research prompts, writing topics, and at least one bulletin board idea.
Next, in the VOLCABULARY section, are word lists with definitions presented in book order and identified by page number. The dictionary and word usage activities cover the selected vocabulary in chapter sequence and whole book. These activities are designed for use BEFORE reading so students will have some knowledge of the terms when they encounter them in reading. They can, however, be used successfully at teacher's discretion during any phase of the novel study.
The third component, CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS. are suitable for home-assigned reading, small group, whole class, conferencing, or individual assessment. These items not intrepretive. They require FACTUAL RESPONSES.
Full answer keys, including short answer questions, are included.
