The activities in this printable are intended to supplement Houghton Mifflin Reading for Second Grade Theme 5. Included for each story are leveled syllabication, word sort, and ABC order activities. These activities are intended for independent, paired or small group instruction and make a great addition to your literacy centers or work stations!
For each of the stories I've included: 2 sets of tiered cut and sort word cards, a sort and record sheet, and 2 tiered alphabetizing activity sheets. Tier 1 cards contain one and two-syllable words, while tier 2 cards contain two, three, and four syllable words. Students identify and highlight the target phonics pattern (what child doesn't LOVE a highlighter!), divide the words into syllables, then cut out, sort and glue the words to their corresponding recording sheet. Students then alphabetize their words on a separate response sheet. Directions, extension activities, and answer keys are included.

Brothers and Sisters- -er endings in two-syllable words
Jalapeno Bagels- -le ending in two-syllable words
Carousel- -sounds of y
Thunder Cake- silent consonants gh, (k)n, b

Hi there! I'm so sorry you're having problems. Technology can be so frustrating sometimes! I'm not sure why that is happening with a PDF, but Tpt recommends for this problem that you click on your "My Purchases" button and scroll down to the green text. It should read: "If you purchased a PDF and it is after you open it, solve it this way: on a MAC or PC, install the latest version of ADOBE READER. Then, open the file with ADOBE READER. That's it. On a MAC, make sure to "Open With" ADOBE READER and NOT Preview. If it's still blurry, that's because you are still opening it with Preview." If you follow these directions and still have trouble, please email me at kamp.linda@gmail.com and I will email you the file. I hope this helps!
