This is a set of mentor texts to be used when teaching a "how to" books writing unit. It is difficult to find mentor texts in the library that really show young writers specifically what we want them to do, at their level. These books offer high quality examples, using exactly the criteria we have for the kids. Two books use photographs, and two have hand drawings.
These are designed to be used in tandem with my "How To" books unit and checklist paper, which you can also get in my store. The files were too large for one download! However, these mentor texts can be used on their own as well.

This item is only the mentor texts. I have a product called "How To" Books Writing Paper Using Checklists - Common Core!" that has all of the paper and materials for students, as well as a pacing guide. I am glad you like the mentor texts!

If there was an option to give you an A+++ I totally would! I was really trying to find some relatable mentor texts to use with my kindergartners in order to get them to produce a good How-to book. This is EXACTLY what I need to help me teach them. Thank you so so so much!

I have been working with young children since I was sixteen years old, and was a counselor in training at summer camp. After seven years counseling, directing, teaching,and organizing camping and outdoor education programs, I began pursuing my teaching certification. I interned and worked at a Head Start, a daycare, and a Reggio Emilia based child development center with young children, all before finding my home as a kindergarten teacher for the public school system. I have now had the honor and privilege of teaching kindergartners for six years, and each year has brought more adventures, learning, and joy!
