The Power of Pattern in Plot

Question: How do we teach a child to effectively develop plot?

Answer:
The easiest way for a child to learn how to write is by imitation. Jon Scieszka, author of The Frog Prince Continued, claims most writers learn this way.

Question: How do we teach a child to imitate without plagiarizing?

Answer: Take a picture book and see if it is possible to create a new story by:

*CHANGING the setting and characters, but KEEPING the main character's s motive (what the character wants or needs)

Show your students how authors do it by comparing these two books:
It's not Easy Being a Bunny by Marilyn Sadler
Home for Christmas by Jan Brett

Both authors wrote a journey circle story about a character tired of his life who ran away and lived with other characters. Both books end with the characters happy to go home.
