This unit is awesome! I teach 4 different subjects in middle school so I don't have the time to create my own units. The Jeopardy Games alone are worth the price! The suggested sequence of activities is paced just right. My students love the book and the activities. Thank you for making it so much easier to teach this book!

I just want to say thank you for your amazing resources for The Hunger Games. I downloaded it at the end of last year before I even read the trilogy.
Once I read the books and then looked through your lessons, i was SO excited to start with my new class.
School started on the 1st of Feb for us in Australia and I told them my plans for this term. I told them about The Hunger Games and that i have ordered them each a copy of the book. They haven't arrived yet, so i have been reading to them. WOW...they are SO engaged and excited. 4 of my students went out and bought the book and one bought the E-book. I have used your chapters tests every day and have started the survival pack with them.
We are going as a class to watch the movie and they are looking forward to doing the projects.
I totally recommend this to anyone teaching The Hunger Games.

My 9's are in the midst of actually making their "mutts". If you are lucky enough to have The Hunger Games in your school, your department needs this unit!

I've never seen them so enthused about learning, using, and exploring vocabulary, characters, and book themes. My kids are connecting every book we've read together this year to different parts of The Hunger Games based on themes and ideas inspired by this amazing unit.

I loved the series and had suggested they read the book independently, since I did not have the time to create the necessary materials. Wow! Did I luck out finding your Novel Unit!!! Thank you from both my students and me! They want to go on a class field trip to see the movie when it is released in March. As for your work on this unit, it is above and beyond what I expected! This is an excellent start to a really interesting and fun unit for students. I am planning to use almost all of the activities, and found the only thing lacking to be more in-depth writing assignments, which not everyone is looking for. I will say that the discussion questions gave many great ideas for writing work! I thought the product looked extremely professional and was well-planned and designed. I am moving to Mockingjay with a different group and would certainly purchase from this seller again. Great work!

This is a great curriculum and I love the fact that she includes updates. My students are really engaged and are willing to push themselves further that they have previously done. I would love to see a question about the role (theme?) of mental health issues in adults (depression, alcoholism, narcissim) since a lot of my students deal with these issues in their family. This gives them a safe place to discuss these and the reasons they occur. Great work!

There is certainly plenty to "do" but there are no clear objectives outside of the standards for Orman's home state. These activities seem to promote busy work more than build skills - there is a notable lack of critical analysis in any of these activities.

This unit was so helpful! I teach a Skills level Junior English class and the activities are perfect for their reading level. However, you could easily differentiate with the activities because the author provides tons of extension activities range from etymology of character names to creating facebook pages. The worksheets contain graphics and layouts that look professional enough to be published! Plus the fact that I could automatically download everything was very helpful. Awesome job! Thanks!

There is a lot of stuff here, and that is worth it's weight in gold. I will use to so happily! Two things I think would make it better: including a planning guide (what to do on each day). Teachers probably couldn't follow it to the letter, but it would be a good starting place. Also, it would be helpful if the pages were numbered.

This is a great product to use if it's your first time teaching The Hunger Games! It gave me the freedom to develop activities and ideas beyond the basics - time that would have otherwise been spent writing reading-check questions and hunting for vocabulary words. I only gave it a B+ for overall quality because I wished there was a larger section of critical thinking/advanced thinking questions. There are some - and they're great - but I happen to be at a school that really pushes them, so I felt the need for more. HOWEVER, because the product was so thorough and practical, I was able to take the time to develop my own (additional) deeper questions - so in that sense I'm VERY glad I bought this product and I highly recommend it.

I thought the Hunger Games would be a great addition and something a little more current and laid-back. I love all the "extra" activities like the maps and facebook sheets. I think of this unit as a combination of my work (if I had time) and my favorite art teacher's work - content and beautiful graphics that motivate the kids while learning at the same time. I know they will enjoy the many activities and interesting different connections that are in the guide.

I created all my lessons with my most stubborn students in mind, thinking "What would get them fired up?" This was the best novel guide that I've ever seen. I teach US Literature to 11th grade students. Next year my group will be extremely challenging so I decided to introduce the course differently - sort of a "here we are now, how did we get here" approach. With the movie coming out fall and such a great, teen-interest novel, I knew this was a great choice. I was just researching ideas for checking comprehension as well as more creative activities when I came upon this guide. It had both, and alternatives for technology instruction as well as traditional instruction. I love that there were adaption suggestions included for use with our without technology. Teaching in a 1:1 laptop school is fun and new ideas for using technology in content courses are always welcome.

I am teaching Sophomore English in summer school and I let the students choose the books we would read. I had no materials for Hunger Games but I knew they would love it. I found your materials and had reservations about purchasing but after reading the feedback and looking at the samples I took a chance. And it REALLY paid off! Your materials are great. It would have taken me days to make these materials and some of the materials I never would have thought of nor had the skills to make. I am about to teach summer school and wanted a high interest novel for my students. Armed with the Hunger Games, and prepared to have to write my own study guide, I did one last internet search and saw this. I thought "why not?" and bought it...Incredible! Why have you not gotten this published through Scholastic? This is really high-quality workmanship. I am extremely impressed - it is above and beyond ANY novel study material I have EVER purchased. I can't wait to use it, and my own kids have already started working on the mazes for fun. I will be a costumer of your for life. :)

Excellent unit, well worth the money! Great chapter questions and ideas for creative projects. It has also helped inspire some more ideas of my own. I am teaching this for the first time and do not have time to write my own, so this has saved me. MUCH better than most units that are basic and boring; this one is what you would want to write yourself!

I have just downloaded the packet and the resources are unbelievable! My students will love this, and I'm not doing The Hunger Games till September with next year's seventh grade! The books have gone through this present grade like wildfire, and they would have loved doing these activities. I especially like how you created activities that connect to modern times and things that this generation can relate to.(Facebook, Ebay, etc.) I also like how I can use some of the resources in conjunction with what the students are doing in Latin.

Most of the typical assignments (the tests, quizzes, other worksheets) are individual; however, there are numerous projects, activities, discussion questions that can be used cooperatively. I'm not sure what you mean by temporary files? You should be able to just save the zipped folder (or the contents that were extracted when you unzipped) right onto your flash drive. Or you can download it again at school from that computer. All the files are permanent. I'm not sure what you mean by temporary files? You should be able to just save the zipped folder (or the contents that were extracted when you unzipped) right onto your flash drive. Or you can download it again at school from that computer. All the files are permanent. It is a zipped file, and it is very large. If you use a Mac, just doubleclick and it will unzip and go to your downloads folder. The large files take time loading up. It could also be a glitch on the site; just try downloading again. If you have a PC, you may need software to actually open a zipped file.

It depends where you live. I ship from Illinois. Neighboring states usually get it in 1-2 days, with east and west coasters averaging 3-4 days. Some locations may take up to 7 days, but on rare occasions. If you need to start it right away I can email you some of the materials after you purchase so you have those right away. With my low English class (9th graders) we actually spent 10 weeks on it. I spent about 4-5 weeks on it with my regular & high readers. I did not use all of the activities at once. I've taught it 4 times now and have switched things up each time, based on my students and the time we had. I think a minimum amount of time would probably be 3-4 weeks. There's enough in the unit to take 10 weeks or more if you wanted, though. :) Good luck, Christine! It's a great novel for a new teacher. Your students will LOVE it!

You would be amazed at how many students actually beg to have their work used in a lesson! :) I have not been able to find any clip art out there that is age-appropriate and works for me, so I do play around a lot with my photos & shapes. I plan on uploading more jpeg & png files for commercial use in the next couple days. You just pay once & can use it to your heart's desire for products. Also, you should also check press-packs for novels. Oftentimes publishers welcome the free advertising and put out free graphics for businesses to use in promotional materials. Another site to check is deviantart.com. You can contact the artist directly for permission. You can also purchase ones you like, as well. I hope that helps & good luck, Kimberly! I think it would be OK for a read aloud as long as you discussed the serious topics with kids as you read. There will likely be things they may not understand. It also depends on your community and parents. My son read as a 5th grader, but we talked about passages and read a lot together. I would not assign it for independent reading at that level. The publisher lists ages 12 and up, and in my opinion, I think 6th grade is fine if you are talking with the students each day (I have detailed notes on specific areas you can cover). But you may want to wait and meet your students first and see if they are mature enough. Good luck!

I have been able to open and use all of the documents in the HungerGamesUpdatedUnit211 files, but have not been able to open any of the documents in the _MACOSX file. I think it varies by your age group & how much you want to do with your students. I have enough materials to last more than a month (probably good for at least 5-6 weeks with 11th grade). But sometimes the older students want to read through it faster. But you should have enough to keep them busy. Hope that helps!

One more question. I'm having issues with some of the PDF files when they print. The titles are coming out as gibberish. And also on some of the puzzle pdf files. Is this because it is a special font you're using? If so, how do I make sure it prints okay. Approximately how long do you project this activity to take? A semester, a quarter? I am doing this with an enrichment class that has only 20 minutes a day, every day of the week.
Also, an answer to another person's question on here, when I read this to my 7th graders last year, and then this year I moved to 8th grade, the students read The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, and they said it reminded them of Hunger Games, so maybe that movie could be something to watch?

Approximately how long do you project this activity to take? A semester, a quarter? I am doing this with an enrichment class that has only 20 minutes a day, every day of the week.
Also, an answer to another person's question on here, when I read this to my 7th graders last year, and then this year I moved to 8th grade, the students read The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, and they said it reminded them of Hunger Games, so maybe that movie could be something to watch?

Yes-I include a comparison with the Lottery in my unit on CD. I did not have enough room to fit it on the digital download, though. The time frame is really up to you. There is enough for you to take an entire semester, OR you can just pick & choose activities and/or quizzes and be done in 3 weeks. Hope that helps!

I bought the unit plan for the Hunger Games and I'm not sure that I got the Reaping Activity? It's not in the binder I printed of the files in the unit (my saved copy of the zipped folder is currently unavailable.) Where would I find it?

The reaping activity can be found two places (both in the Student worksheets folder): it is a separate file called HGreaping.pdf and also in the file HGsurvivalpack beginning on page 14. I label everything with HG to separate it from my CF (Catching Fire) and MJ (Mockingjay) documents that are often named the same. I hope that helps! The other quizzes are all together in the "HGcheckquizzes" file. Chapter 1 is longer because there is so much information to process. There's also the Parts 1 & 2 tests and the final exam. You should have more than just that one file in the folder.

Good question. "The Running Man" is not appropriate for 8th graders; I did show parts of it to my high schoolers with permission slips. We talked about watching "The Truman Show" because of the similarities with reality TV, having an audience watch your life, not being in control of your life. But it's not the same in terms of the actual conflict or govt. controlling all the citizens. It's just one guy not having control over his own life. But it may be an interesting assignment for them to find the connection between the two. Students typically come up with a lot more things when they have to. :)
