I Can Use My Classroom Voice is an example of a social narrative, an evidence based practice found effective for teaching social and behavior skills to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as well as other students who demonstrate with social and behavioral difficulties. It is based upon the Social Stories strategy, developed by Carol Gray. It is written at approximately a second grade reading level, but can be adapted and used with children either younger or older, in general and special education classrooms. I Can Use My Classroom Voice is written at approximately a second grade reading level, but can be used with younger or older children depending upon their needs. It addresses the concepts of volume, tone of voice and speaking politely. It includes a classroom poster, which could be posted as a visual support to prompt the behavior in the classroom until mastered. Worksheets are also included to review and reinforce the concepts taught.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I began teaching more than twenty years ago and have taught special and general education classes, at the elementary and secondary levels. Currently I serve as a special education program specialist in a public school district, providing consultation support to both special and general education teachers of students with special needs. As a consultant I spend much of my time assisting our teachers to implement positive behavior supports within their classrooms in order to meet the needs of all of their students, but particularly those who demonstrate significant social, emotional and behavioral challenges.
