Children need multiple strategies for learning to read. Teach these strategies through a fun song to help them remember what good readers do when they come to a word they do not know. Love it - only minor complaint is that I have the tune stuck in my head! But, it's worth it because the catchy tune helps the children remember the strategies. Thanks.

After they learnt the song, I hold them accountable to the strategies before they ask for help. I ask them, "What strategies did you use?" Most of them usually sing the last part. What works really well is to help them figure out which strategies they use the most. Thanks for leaving feedback and for visiting my store.

We have motions that we do as a class. I will try to explain but it will be better when you can see the video on my blog. For "look at the picture" we make a picture frame in the air. For "skip over it" we use our arm/hand like the arrow on the page. For "get your mouth ready" we point our finger to our mouth. For "look for the chunk" we pull our hands together like we found a small chunk in a word. For "sound it out" we pretend we are holding a microphone. I do that so when they sound a word out to me during guided reading, I can hear the sounds they are making. For "does it make sense" we put our finger on our "brains" to show that good readers read for comprehension. For "what can it be" we hold up both arms (bent with hands up) and shrug are shoulders like we are trying to figure it out.
My students like to point at me when it says, "Won't my teacher be so proud of me." I always nod my head yes after they point to me to show that I am proud. Smiles go off all over the room. Early childhood teachers have the best jobs!
